Crossing the Russian Mongolian Border
At Khyakhta we crossed the boarder into Mongolia. Once upon a time this was a THRIVING CITY as it was a major stop on the silk route from China. We arrived in our van at the Russian border but if you have more than 4 passengers you are considered a bus and a slightly more complicated entry process so we put Diane and Nancy on a bus that was crossing at the same time so we could be processed as a private vehicle. You go thru all the typical checks on the Russian side….go a few yards and do it all again on the Mongolian side. (Everyone was very excited to see the two little boys born in Mongolia a from Chicago and speaking such fluent English) We had our pictures taken to show any fevers, passed the health department and were on our way. The whole process took just short of 2 hours. And Andrei said that was excellent time!
7 crazy hours later we arrived in Ulan Bataar!! YAH!!!!! The ride was very dusty, the driver drove like a madman- passing cars and dodging pot holes BUT the steppes are Fantastic... roaming Cows, Horses, Sheep, and Yak.
They say there are 2 million people living in Mongolia and 50 Million Animals!
